How to Find Ancient Debris: Best Y Level and How Many You Need

How to find ancient debris in Java 26.3: mine at Y 8–24 (best at Y 16), which methods are worth it, and exactly how many debris a full netherite set costs.

How to find ancient debris in Minecraft: go to the Nether and mine at Y 8 to 24, ideally right at Y 16. The Minecraft Wiki identifies Y 16 as the level with the most ancient debris on average. Bring a diamond or netherite pickaxe, because any other tool breaks the block and drops nothing. Ancient debris never generates exposed to air. The only way to find it is to expose as many blocks as you can at that height, either by tunnelling or with explosions it survives.

Then the maths. One ancient debris smelts into one netherite scrap. Four scrap plus four gold ingots make one netherite ingot, and each netherite piece takes one ingot plus a Netherite Upgrade smithing template. That works out to 16 ancient debris for full armor and 40 for armor plus a full tool set. Everything below is checked against the Minecraft Wiki for Java 26.3. The wiki's history lists no change to ancient debris generation in 26.1 through 26.3.

Ancient debris Y level: where it spawns and why Y 16 wins

In Java Edition, every Nether chunk runs two separate generation passes for ancient debris:

PassCluster sizeY rangeDistribution
10–3 debrisY 8 to 24Triangle: concentrated toward the middle of the range
20–2 debrisY 8 to 119Even across the whole range

That's why the answer to "what level does ancient debris spawn" is really two answers. The first pass is the one to target. It is bigger, packed into a 17-block band and peaks in the middle, which puts the best average at Y 16. The second pass explains the odd piece you find high in the Nether, but it spreads a smaller cluster across more than a hundred levels, so you can't hunt it efficiently.

Ancient debris only replaces netherrack, basalt and blackstone (basalt and blackstone in Java only). The wiki puts the average at about 1.65 debris per chunk, a figure it flags as needing testing, with an older 1.16.5 figure of about 1.56. That's roughly a 0.004% chance that any given block in a chunk is debris. When blobs straddle chunk borders, a single chunk can hold up to 11, and blobs of up to 20 connected debris are possible across four adjoining chunks.

Bedrock note: Bedrock Edition generates differently. It uses up to five clusters per chunk: two of 0–3 spread evenly from Y 8 to 23, plus three of 0–2 spread evenly from Y 8 to 119.

Best way to find ancient debris: the methods compared

Every method does the same thing: it exposes more blocks per minute at the right height. The Minecraft Wiki's ancient debris mining tutorial covers each one. Numbers below that are the tutorial's guidance rather than game rules are labelled that way.

1. Strip mining at Y 16

Strip mining (or branch mining) means tunnelling long, straight corridors at Y 16 and checking the walls. It is the simplest and safest method, and the tutorial notes that only tools and food are strictly needed. It sets no tunnel spacing: go one way until you hit lava, then turn. With an Efficiency II or better diamond pickaxe, which mines netherrack instantly, the tutorial puts the pace at about 12 blocks per second. You'll know when you've hit debris: it has a hardness of 30 and takes 5.65 seconds to break with a diamond pickaxe (5 seconds with netherite), far slower than the netherrack around it.

2. TNT

The other explosive option, alongside the bed method below. Ancient debris has a blast resistance of 1,200, so the explosion clears the much weaker netherrack and leaves the debris standing. The wiki gives no TNT layout or spacing, so we won't invent one.

3. The bed method

Beds explode if you try to sleep in them in the Nether. The Minecraft Wiki's Bed page documents this as a game mechanic and names debris mining as a use for it. The blast has power 5, stronger than TNT's 4, and debris survives it. The wiki's mining tutorial gives the setup:

  1. Mine down to Y 15, which the tutorial says has the highest concentration of debris in exposed blocks.
  2. Dig a main tunnel, and every 16 blocks cut a 1×1×5 side tunnel at eye level.
  3. Place a bed at the end of the side tunnel.
  4. Back off at least 6 blocks, then right-click the bed. The tutorial warns that any closer and the blast can hurt or kill you.
  5. Check the crater. Each blast may expose up to 3 debris.

The spacing and standoff are tutorial guidance, not game rules. The tutorial advises a Totem of Undying, Blast Protection armor and Fire Resistance potions, though it doesn't require them. The catch is that the method uses up many beds, so you need a reliable supply of wool and wood.

Lava safety while you tunnel

The Nether at Y 16 is lava country. The tutorial's recommended equipment includes Fire Resistance potions and Protection IV armor, which extends how long you survive in lava. One thing you don't need to worry about is losing the debris itself, because dropped ancient debris floats on lava and is immune to fire.

What doesn't help

Fortune doesn't help. The wiki's breaking and smelting tables show no Fortune interaction and no enchantment note: one debris always gives one scrap. Don't save your Fortune III pickaxe for this.

Bastion loot: a bonus, not a plan

Bastion remnant chests can skip part of the grind. In Java, a treasure chest has a 19.9% chance of netherite scrap and a 35% chance of a full netherite ingot. Generic chests (4.5%) and hoglin stable chests (8%) can also hold scrap.

How many ancient debris for full armor and tools

The chain is 1 debris → 1 scrap → 4 scrap + 4 gold → 1 ingot → 1 ingot + 1 template + 1 diamond item → 1 netherite item. The wiki states that a full set of all netherite tools and armor costs 10 ingots.

GoalAncient debrisGold ingotsNetherite ingotsUpgrade templates
One piece4411
Full armor (4 pieces)161644
Full set of armor and tools40401010

At the wiki's ~1.65 per chunk average, 16 debris is roughly ten chunks' worth, counting every debris those chunks hold at any height (that's our arithmetic, not a measured figure).

Where the Netherite Upgrade template comes from

Netherite Upgrade templates only generate as loot in bastion remnant chests, in both Java and Bedrock. The treasure chest always has one (100%), and bridge, hoglin stable and generic chests each have a 10% chance. You don't need to find ten. 1 diamond + 1 Netherite Upgrade template + 1 netherrack crafts into 2 templates. Each duplication costs a diamond and nets you one extra template, so one template found in the wild is enough to start. The template requirement dates from the 1.20 era (it first appeared in snapshot 23w04a). Older guides that say you only need an ingot predate it.

What to do with ancient debris: turning it into netherite

  1. Smelt it. Use a furnace or blast furnace with any fuel. Each debris becomes one netherite scrap, and taking the scrap out of the furnace gives 2 XP.
  2. Craft the ingot. Combine 4 netherite scrap and 4 gold ingots in a crafting grid. The recipe is shapeless, so placement doesn't matter.
  3. Upgrade at a smithing table. Put in the Netherite Upgrade template, the diamond item and one netherite ingot. Durability, enchantments and custom names carry over.

Because enchantments carry over, enchant your diamond gear before upgrading it. If Mending is on your list, our guide to getting Mending fast covers the librarian route, and our villager trading hall guide covers scaling it up. Mending gear needs a steady XP supply, and the farms in our mob farm guide can provide it.

Does ancient debris burn in lava?

No. The block isn't flammable and doesn't catch fire from lava, and as an item it floats on lava and is completely immune to fire. It also shrugs off explosions (blast resistance 1,200). The one real way to waste a find is the wrong pickaxe: anything below diamond breaks it for nothing.

FAQ

What is the fastest way to find ancient debris?

Expose as many blocks as possible at Y 16 with a diamond or netherite pickaxe. Strip mining is the cheap baseline. The wiki tutorial's bed method may expose up to 3 debris per blast but uses a lot of beds, and TNT works for the same blast-resistance reason. Mining along chunk borders doesn't help: the tutorial says you see fewer blocks per chunk there, which cancels out the veins that cross over.

What is the best Y level for ancient debris?

Y 16. The main generation pass runs from Y 8 to 24 and peaks in the middle, and the Minecraft Wiki states that Y 16 has the most ancient debris on average.

How rare is 4 ancient debris?

Fairly lucky in one spot. The wiki's average is about 1.65 per chunk, so four is roughly two and a half chunks' worth. A single cluster holds at most 3 (main pass) or 2 (second pass), so four touching means two clusters generated next to each other. Up to 11 in one chunk is possible.

Why am I not finding any ancient debris?

The usual causes:

Fortune won't change your luck. As of 26.3, nothing on the wiki suggests any enchantment does.
